David VanLanding of Mannekin
March 29, 2010
By
Stacy Arrington

1. I realize that you have many fans from the Mannekin days in Baltimore. But you also have newer fans too, such as myself, who came to know you through “what I was told about the Mannekin days” since I was just under the legal limit back then to see you live. Can you tell us a bit about how Mannekin came to be?

David: There were a couple Mannekin’s before us but this line-up was extremely popular across the U.S. whereas the first 2 were pretty much isolated to the Balt/Wash area. We at one point were the highest paid unsigned band in the U.S. I played around the DC area and once did a show with the 2nd Mannekin at the Wax Museum and when they broke up, Greg Orem remembered me and contacted me to be the singer for the new Mannekin and the rest is history.

2. I’m sure you have many stories about your experiences in the 80’s with Mannekin whether it be parties, girls, or touring adventures. Can you tell us about any?

David: I don’t know where to start, some things I can’t talk about for the obvious but let me brainstorm with short sentences in no particular order:

-opening for Night Ranger
-going to Europe to record
-Rob Halford getting on stage with us many, many times
-touring the U.S. and Canada
-Kiss getting on stage with us in Louisville
-All the amazing cities especially Houston & The Twin Cities but none of them compare to Baltimore
-And yes, all the women…God, all the women!

3. What was it like when the realization that Mannekin was over came to light? Why did Mannekin end?

David: Mannekin ended because I honestly felt we did everything we could possibly do as a band. But I felt all good things come to an end and Tommy O’Steen & I left the band. It may have been a bit premature but I have no regrets.

4. You have worked and shared the stage with many celebrities? Among them who are your favorites?

David: As I said before, We shared the stage with Rob Halford from Judas Priest. Paul Stanley & Bruce Kulick got onstage with us in Kentucky. I have been onstage with Brian May of Queen, Jason Newsted of Metallica, Joe Satriani just to name a few.

5. Can you tell us a little about how you became a part of MSG and Crimson Glory?

David: As far as Crimson Glory is concerned, Mannekin use to play a club in Tampa, FL and the owner of the club contacted me saying that CG was looking for me to replace Midnight. I learned the material and flew in, rehearsed one day and did a live show immediately after.MSGMichael Schenker was looking for a singer while in Phoenix, AZ. I use to record there and the owner of the studio told Michael about me and I auditioned after many other singers and got the job.

6. You recently performed with Crimson Glory after Midnights passing? What was that like?

David: I played with Crimson Glory in Atlanta at the Progpower USA festival. I wasn’t the only singer, there was about 12 of us so it was a tribute to Midnight who had passed away several months earlier. It was great seeing all the guys again!

7. On April 3rd members of Mannekin return to the stage at the Maxwells reunion show. Have you stayed in touch with them through the years since Mannekin ended?

David: I will be performing with the original guitar players from Mannekin, Greg Orem & Eric Conn. As far as keeping up with the guys, I talk to Tommy O’steen the most because he and I were like brothers through the Mannekin years. I also keep up with DJ Glass but I don’t hear much from Dave White.

8. I am sure you will see many old friends at the reunion, are you looking forward to this?

David: I am looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends but it will also be surreal because the old days are so long gone. I know like many others, we would to take a hot tub and go back in time.

9. Tell us about David VanLanding now, in 2010.

David: I am happily married to a wonderful woman who rocks my world in so many ways. I got out of the biz for a while totake care of my mother who eventually passed away from cancer. After that I didn’t want to sing for a few years but I have slowly made the transition to getting back in the game
.

10. is there anything you want to say to your friends, family, and fans who have stuck with you through the years?

David: I just want to thank all the people who have stayed behind me through all the years. Especially the Mannekin fans…even today I get emails through my website about how much Mannekin influenced them or affected them. It is unbelievable after all these years how much I still hear about that band. Again, thank you everyone & thanks for the memories!!!
